🗺️ The Reading Roadmap
A practitioner’s order of operations for mindset, habits, money, and execution.
Before you buy anything, check the usual free and cheap spots first. Thrift stores, your local library, and the Libby app all have most of these titles, and there’s no reason to pay full price if you don’t have to. If you strike out there, Amazon and Audible are solid backups, especially if you’re someone who reads better with your ears during a commute or a workout.
Here’s the order I’d read these in if you’re starting from scratch. Each one builds on the last.
Disclosure: Some links below are Amazon Associate affiliate links. If you buy through one, I earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. I only recommend books I’ve actually read and would hand to someone myself.
1. Who Moved My Cheese? by Spencer Johnson
Start here. It’s short, it’s simple, and it sets the tone for everything else on this list. Change is coming whether you plan for it or not, and this book gets you comfortable with that idea before you dive into anything heavier.
2. Don’t Believe Everything You Think by Joseph Nguyen
Once you accept that change is constant, the next step is realizing how much of your stress comes from your own thinking, not your circumstances. This one will shift how you talk to yourself.
3. The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey
The foundation. If you only read one “classic” off this list, make it this one. Everything else here is really just a variation or an application of the principles Covey lays out.
4. The 5am Club by Robin Sharma
Habits mean nothing without a routine to house them. This book will push you to protect your mornings, which is where I found most of my own traction.
5. Earn Your Success! by Joshua Hirsch
My own book fits here because it’s about turning the mindset and habit work you’ve just read into something personal and actionable. It’s the bridge between “I understand this” and “I’m actually doing this.”
6. Extreme Ownership by Jocko Willink and Leif Babin
Now that you’re building better habits, it’s time to raise the bar on accountability. No excuses, no blame, just ownership. This one hits hard whether you lead a team or just lead yourself.
7. Hidden Potential by Adam Grant
A good gut check on what’s actually possible for you. Grant makes the case that character and effort matter more than raw talent, which pairs well with everything you’ve read so far.
8. The Personal MBA by Josh Kaufman
Time to get practical. This is business fundamentals without the business school price tag, and it’ll give you a working vocabulary for the money books coming next.
9. Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill
The original money mindset book, and honestly the grandfather of half the personal development titles on this list. Read it before Kiyosaki so you have the philosophy in place before the tactics.
10. Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki
Assets versus liabilities, and why what you were taught about money growing up might be holding you back. Builds directly on the mindset work from Think and Grow Rich.
11. I Will Teach You to Be Rich by Ramit Sethi
Where mindset turns into a system. Concrete, step-by-step, and less philosophical than the previous two. Good combo with what you just read.
12. Your Money or Your Life by Vicki Robin
Ties money back to time and values. A good gut check before moving into the more entrepreneurial reads.
13-14. Crush It! and Crushing It! by Gary Vaynerchuk
Read these back to back since Crushing It is essentially the sequel. Both are about building something of your own and putting yourself out there, which fits right after the money mindset work.
15. The 4-Hour Body by Tim Ferriss
A change of pace. By this point you’ve done a lot of mental and financial work, so it’s a good time to turn some attention to your physical performance and health.
16. The Built Before Sunrise Planner
The capstone. Everything above is mindset, habits, money, and leadership. This planner is where you actually put it into practice every single day.
